A good residents' association is one that is often a group of tenacious people wanting to serve their local community.  They get things done and meet regularly to discuss housing, community or environmental matters affecting their block of flats, estate or houses.

They also willingly share information, knowledge and skills with accountability and transparency.  They keep accurate records and make them available to their members, especially their accounts.  They certainly act democratically seeing themselves as serving their community not lauding it over residents.  Regardless of whether someone rents or owns their home, the most important thing is that people endeavour to work together to improve the physical conditions of where they live, campaign for better facilities and improve the sense of community in their area.

What affects one person (or several) can affect everyone in the block or area.  At the same time, what better way to get to know the people around you, whether it is to interact socially or prevent crimes and anti-social behaviour.   If we prefer to shut ourselves away and have less involvement in our immediate communities, everyone will suffer in the end.  Under RAUK, we would like to set up a quality mark to ensure residents' Associations are are run well and to a high standard.

Like any business or organisation, a residents association is only as good as the people who run it and so we want to encourage RAs to be as well run and effective as they possibly can. We also want to make people aware of the great RAs in this country and to inspire others to replicate them.  At the same time, we also want to be effective in solving problems within RAs and the individuals who cause them so that necessary adjustments can be made to create harmony in their communities. This takes tremendous skills, empathy and patience and not qualities everyone has naturally but that isn't to say that they can't be learnt or developed.

We have been dealing with several problems faced by individuals in or with residents associations. Running an RA is quite a responsibility but there is no accountability so each RA is a law unto themselves unless they are attached to a local council or housing association. This isn't fair to members who give their time and even money freely to their RA. This causes such unnecessary and additional distress and frustration to good-hearted people because of the different agendas, personalities and egos involved.  This can also be viewed as fraud.

Since we started this project, we have been dealing with several problems faced by individuals in or with residents associations. This causes such unnecessary and additional distress and frustration to good-hearted people because of the different agendas, personalities and egos involved.  This can also be viewed as fraud.

In order to attract as many to join us as possible, we are now offering membership to the Good Services Bureau. However, as we grow there will be the need to form a board of trustees for the governance of the association and to raise funds for further development. There would be different types of membership such as an Individual Membership and a Group Membership (for RAs, Councils, Housing Organisations and other bodies working in the communities in this country).

We would need to agree on the standards to which each RA must adhere. A quality mark logo for their paperwork will be designed to show they meet such standards.  We feel that the high standards are so important because of the stressful lives we find ourselves facing and so the last thing is to have a falling out with each other because people are unable to agree or communicate effectively. I hope you will agree with me and let me know how you would like to move things forward after discussion with your neighbours.

We invite you to join the Good Services Bureau so that we can support you better and you can support each other.  We understand you or your RA
may not be in any position to do so at this time, but please consider making a small
donation towards our work. Thank you
